Mercedes F1 begins to recruit our engineering students

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team has recently announced to our engineering students the launch of Daventry UTC Student of the Year Mercedes F1 Award. Every year, the most deserving student that wishes to pursue an Apprenticeship with Mercedes will be awarded a coveted place at Mercedes’s interview/assessment centre, and a cash prize followed by a week of work experience.

Mercedes F1 produces its motorsport powertrains in Brixworth, Northamptonshire – just 30 miles from our UTC, which due to its achievements and values has been selected by the Formula One team as a fit place to scope for new talent.

Each year, the Mercedes F1 receives over 500 apprenticeship applications, 50 of which are invited to an assessment centre from which 5 are being selected to undertake apprenticeships. Our most deserving engineering student will automatically be granted a place on the assessment centre, increasing his or her chance by tenfold. Apprenticeship wage at Mercedes starts at £14,000 and increases every six months until it reaches £19,000 at the end of the 3 year Advanced Apprenticeship scheme. Each apprentice also receives many bonuses, including a podium bonus, awarded when a Mercedes engine achieves a podium finish at a Formula One race.

David Edmondson, our Principal said: ‘We have been preparing for a long time to meet Mercedes’s requirements to host the Daventry UTC Mercedes F1 Award, and I am extremely pleased to finally be able to announce it publicly. Mercedes F1 are by far the best Formula One team, this year they have secured its second consecutive F1 Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships.

The award is designed to recognize the most deserving engineering student, but I know that many more of our students will be applying for the apprenticeship scheme. They are studying extremely hard, as they want to be involved in building the best power unit for Lewis Hamilton in order to help him win the championship again next season. This is a priceless opportunity for local students to work for a world leading company, straight after finishing their studies at our UTC“.

Take part in our Open Event on Tuesday, 24th November 16:00 - 18:30 if you wish to find our more and to discover Daventry UTC.

Lewis Hamilton has recently visited the factory in Brixworth to thank all of its staff and to celebrate winning the F1 Constructors' Championship.
